Schematic flow chart illustrating the process of Historic GIS, or the Comparison of different Geospatial Data Sets through time.  This analytical framework was initially codified as part of a 1996 strategic study on the role of applied technology in helping to expedite archaeological mandates in mission-critical military environments for the U.S. Army Environmental Planning Center, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Department of the Army (Grossman 1996; 2004 and 2008a&b).
2007 Image Enhancement of Original Color Ground Penetrating Radar Mapped through three feet of shale over-burden, and not previously published in color (cf. Grossman 1981). the Images were digitized and restored by Dr. Grossman and then georeferenced to the 18th century historic lot lines and known building footprints.  The defined anomalies of the significantly denser Radar Map showed direct correlations with excavated structures in 1979 (Grossman 1981, 1982, 2003, 2008a) See Grossman 1981, Defining Boundaries and Targeting Excavation with Ground penetrating Radar: The Case of Raritan Landing.  Environmental Assessment Review, vol 1.no 2. Historic GIS of Muscanetcong Iron Works, Stanhope, New Jersey - Grossman 2002
Early "GIS" artifact density-distribution plots from the excavated 1730 surface of the buried port community of Raritan Landing.  The quantified and georeferenced artifact distribution plots were rendered with Fortran-based mainframe SYMAP dot-density key punch programming nearly a decade before formal GIS systems became available (Grossman 1980, 1981, 2003, 2008b).
